While removal of the Elwha Dam on the Elwha River isn’t slated to begin in 2012, work has already begun on the Port Angeles Water Treatment Plant, and Clallam County is already aware of the benefits this project will provide. In addition to restoring more than 70 miles* of free-flowing habitat for salmon and steelhead, the removal project and associated infrastructure work is expected to infuse much needed dollars into the local economy. According to today’s Peninsula Daily News, Clallam County commissioners expect the removal project to help the local economy rebound faster by increasing tax revenues through sales, gas, and lodging taxes.

*The 70 miles of habitat includes what will be gained through the removal of the Glines Canyon Dam as well.
