The American Rivers Blog might have been relatively quiet this week, but the rest of the Internet wasn’t. With river threats falling from the sky, there is much to be done to protect rivers. Just because this week’s round up includes mostly negatives, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a chance to turn things around. Starting your own blog is a great way to speak out for healthy rivers.
And now the river round up for 12-7 to 12-14:
Lost On The Shore has a multi-part series about taking responsibility for the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
Dumping raw sewage into a river is bad idea, The Deets agrees.
The Gulf Restoration Network also agrees that sewage in a river is a bad idea.
Can good things happen because of a draught? Probably not, but In Our House has noticed her community moving towards more environmentally friendly practices after the most recent water restrictions.
Global warming could affect you on the ski slopes, the Minnesota Monitor has the story.

I would be interested in donated some money to River Keepers. How much $$ goes to ? lobbying, ? administrative? how much goes directly to the area of concern? I live in Wisconsin and am very concerned about our local lakes as well as the Great Lakes. Thanx Deb Burns
Hi Deborah,
Thanks for the comment as well as reading the River Blog from American Rivers.
As a 501(c)3 we are limited to the amount of lobbying we can actually do. However, regarding the break down of our expenses, 77 cents of every dollar goes to program services (btw, we rec’d 4-stars from charity navigator, the highest rating).
As for our work specifically in the great lakes region, we are very active. A great deal of our work in your backyard involves clean water, specifically stormwater runoff. For more information, please contact gary belan (gbalen@americanrivers.org) or Kathryn Swartz (kswartz@americanrivers.org) for more detailed information about our work in your region and how you can get involved.
As for the holiday season and making a contribution to support our efforts @ American Rivers, please visit http://www.americanrivers.org/donate (during December your donation will be doubled!)
Thanks and any more questions, please feel free to contact me directly.
Happy holidays,
Chas
