River Heritage, Go Wild!
Nearly 40 years ago, amidst unchecked dam building and rampant riparian habitat destruction, a movement began to protect what was left of our nation’s wildest rivers.
Since then, the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act has emerged as one of the strongest tools available for protecting America’s outstanding, free-flowing rivers. For the past four decades, this law has preserved some of our nation’s most storied rivers…but the job is far from over.
Thousands of our country’s outstanding rivers have yet to be designated as “Wild and Scenic,â€? leaving them vulnerable to threats from pollution, development and new dam construction. That’s why American Rivers has launch our “40 x 40 Challenge.” We want to designate 40 new Wild and Scenic Rivers by the 40th Anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in 2008 and provide a kick-start to a whole new era of river protection in America.
You got a river you think ranks among the best in the country? Let us know!
